Frequently Asked Questions

Renewable Energy

EarthEra Mall

  • What is a carbon footprint and why is it important?
A carbon footprint is the measure of the carbon dioxide, a leading contributor to climate change, an individual or organization emits in any given year. Most energy we use today is acquired primarily though burning fossil fuels that contribute to climate change. Conservation, recycling and smart energy use all help reduce carbon emissions that lead to climate change. One may reduce or eliminate their carbon footprint by purchasing RECs or by choosing renewable energy.  [Top]
  • What is the EarthEra program?
The EarthEra program is a new, innovative initiative, created by NextEra Energy Resources, the nation's leader in renewable energy generation. EarthEra solutions provide many easy and inexpensive ways for concerned consumers, small businesses and corporations to join together to fight climate change by supporting the creation of new renewable energy development. The brand raises awareness on climate change with events and memberships and provides solutions with leading brands you know and trust.  [Top]
  • What is the EarthEra Renewable Energy Trust?
The EarthEra Renewable Energy Trust was formed to have the maximum impact on our energy future. 100% of funds received by the Trust from the purchase of EarthEra products and services are directed toward the development and construction of new renewable energy projects. All marketing, administrative and other overhead expenses are paid by NextEra Energy Resources, which builds and owns the facilities. The Trust maximizes the beneficial impacts of your voluntary purchase and accelerates our progress toward a cleaner energy future.  [Top]
  • Will 100% of my EarthEra purchase go towards renewable energy development?
The EarthEra Renewable Energy Trust directs 100% of every purchase to the development of new renewable energy facilities, such as wind and solar. All marketing, administrative and other overhead expenses are paid by NextEra Energy Resources, thus assuring that every dollar is used for the development and construction of renewable energy facilities.  [Top]
  • Does the EarthEra Renewable Energy Trust have high administrative costs?
Administration costs are paid wholly, directly and outside of the Trust by NextEra Energy Resources. For maximum environmental benefit, 100% of the funds entering the Trust through your purchases are directed toward the development and construction of new renewable energy facilities, such as wind and solar energy projects.  [Top]
  • What is renewable energy?
Electricity produced from hydroelectric, wind, solar, geothermal, tidal and wave energy. This type of electricity is generated from resources that are naturally replenished.  [Top]
  • What are Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?
The environmental benefit of renewable energy is transferred to businesses and consumers through Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). RECs are also referred to as Green Tags or Renewable Energy Credits. A REC represents the environmental benefits of producing 1,000 kWh (or one megawatt-hour) of electricity from a renewable energy source and the avoidance of the emission of approximately 1,400 pounds of carbon dioxide.  [Top]
  • Is wind energy reliable?
Wind energy is produced when specially designed blades capture natural air currents, spinning a turbine to generate electricity. Today's wind turbines are the most cost-effective renewable energy technology in the world, producing reliable power everyday.  [Top]
  • How can I purchase green energy when I do not have a choice in the type of electricity I receive?
Even though you likely receive non-renewable energy from your local utility, you can still purchase renewable energy by purchasing the green power attributes of renewable energy. Here's how: when renewable energy is created from renewable sources, the electricity is added to the power grid. At the same time, a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is created, verifying the creation of this clean form of electricity. One REC represents one (1) megawatt hour (MWh) generated from a renewable resource. For reference, the typical home uses one MWh of energy per month. Only one person can claim the benefits of the REC and by purchasing them, you are buying the green attributes of renewable energy no matter where it is created. RECs allow you to purchase green energy while supporting the creation of new renewable energy projects in the United States.  [Top]
  • How will my green purchase help fight climate change?
Your purchase will help the renewable energy industry to grow, producing more renewable energy and reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. Supporting renewable energy reduces your personal carbon footprint.  [Top]
  • What is climate change?
Any significant change in measures of climate (such as temperature, precipitation or wind) lasting for an extended period (decades or longer). Climate change may result from: natural factors, such as changes in the sun's intensity or slow changes in the Earth's orbit around the sun; natural processes within the climate system (e.g. changes in ocean circulation); human activities that change the atmosphere's composition (e.g. through burning fossil fuels) and changes to the land surface (e.g. deforestation, reforestation, urbanization, desertification, etc.)  [Top]
  • How is climate change harmful?
Climate change is linked to an increase in severe weather events around the world including higher temperatures, melting icecaps, flooding and drought. If left unchecked, it is possible that climate change will adversely impact our natural ecosystems causing animal extinction and human suffering.  [Top]
  • Do I have an individual role in climate change?
Most of the energy we use day to day comes from the burning of fossil fuels, which in turn, emits carbon into our atmosphere. So, every time we turn on a light, switch on a computer or drive our car, we are leaving our own personal carbon footprint. The more energy we use, the larger our personal impact on the environment.  [Top]
  • What are greenhouse gases?
Any gas that absorbs infrared radiation in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases include, but are not limited to, water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrogen oxide (N2O), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), ozone (O3), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).  [Top]
  • What does the term carbon neutral mean?
A product or process that over its lifecycle does not contribute to the addition of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Also, a term applied to individuals, businesses, or organizations whose practices do not contribute any incremental carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. This can be achieved by reducing or avoiding carbon-emitting activities such as driving and electricity use and by mitigating one's emissions through the purchase of renewable energy certificates for electricity use and carbon offsets for direct emissions like driving.  [Top]
  • If I am partially causing climate change, how can I help stop it?
Noted scientists say we cannot entirely stop global warming and climate change, but do provide two major ways we can reduce its progress. First, we can personally reduce our carbon impact by conserving the amount of energy we use in our homes and offices. Second, we can help neutralize or offset unavoidable energy use by purchasing renewable energy or carbon offset products.  [Top]
